Book Cover
I chose to redesign "The Shining" because I thought it would've been pretty nice to see what I would be able to incorporate in the design to make it the same but different that still tied in with the book/ movie. Some of the plots that I had used for inspiration to make the cover design were the room that they were staying in. I made it creepy looking because the thoughts that Jack had to deal with and the crazy mind of the supernatural being inside the hotel were making him. The part of the plot that I had used was a door because many things had happened behind a closed door or in rooms. I had used a mirror because Jack would usually look at himself and see how things started to go wrong and he would seem very tired. I had used the word "REDRUM" because that was the word that Danny had found on a part of the door when he was somewhere inside the hotel.
WhenI had made this book cover I had wanted a dark theme to go with the concept of it being a horror book. I had initially wanted it to be on the lighter side knowing that it was taking place during a snowstorm but I had kept it with the dark theme.
The steps that it took to make the book cover was that I had to make the background procreate with a mixture of colors grey, blue, and black. After that, I had to save and airdrop the background to photoshop to get the background layers in for the spine, front cover back cover, and the inside flaps. I had to search for pictures that tied in with the book in any way. So I had gone with a door, a mirror, and a word from the movie itself. I had imported the pictures to the book cover template where the background was already set. I had to use those pictures for the front cover. I had to place the pictures in certain positions to that they would look neat and not too cluttered. The door that I had used for the book cover was already dark enough but I chose to darken it with the theme of the background. I had to feather out the outside of the door so that it wouldn't look too sharp, I had also added eyes on the side of the spine so that it would give off a creepy look to it. It had also tied in with the book because to them it felt like there was someone there in the hotel with them. The easiest thing to make the book cover was writing the description of it and creating the background. The hardest part for me was finding the right pictures that would fit nicely on the book cover since the I was going for a dark theme. Having to find the right placements on the whole book cover itself was a little stressful and annoying at times.
